Ask a Local: An Elevated Guide to the Halifax Waterfront

With a working port surrounded by the sparkling ocean, local artisans, seasonal wonders and year-round businesses, the waterfront is an essential Halifax experience. This four-kilometre walk is both relaxing and bustling with life, especially in the summer.

As owner of the custom fine jewellery boutique FRIDA | Fine Jewellery, located on the waterfront, I’m often asked for itineraries. For those wanting to absorb all the Halifax Waterfront has to offer, here are my suggestions.

A Refined Experience at the Harbour South District

Cunard District

After visiting the pier, proceed along the boardwalk to the Cunard District, the newest addition to the waterfront. It’s home to restaurants like Water Polo (gorgeous waterfront dining with elevated seafood), Matadora (fabulous Spanish tapas), Tribute (culinary excellence), and Crème (British-inspired afternoon tea).

Around the corner from the Cunard District, facing Lower Water Street, visit the Londonderry Market boutique for contemporary designer fashion finds.

Bishop’s Landing

Your next stop, a short stroll along the boardwalk from Cunard, is Bishop’s Landing. As my business is based there, I have a particular love of the area. This is Halifax’s most desirable condominium location, supported by independent boutiques, cafés and many of the city’s top restaurants.

Bishop’s Landing is a favourite among locals and visitors, and my destination of choice because of its beautiful seaside patios, fine dining, and boutique shops.

Businesses to visit

Pane e Circo

This café in the Piazza at Bishop’s Landing is known for its great coffee, divine house-made desserts, and croissants of every description. My personal favourite is the amaretti cookies.

URBN-ish

URBN-ish, located in Bishop’s Landing, is my go-to for casual finds, including linens and jeans in every colour, shape, and size.

The Free People brand is one of my favourites at this boutique, offering laid-back luxury with a bohemian spirit.

Also part of Bishop’s Landing, MXM is a contemporary fashion boutique featuring unique pieces, accessories, and emerging international designers.

FRIDA Fine Jewellery

For custom fine jewellery, I invite you to visit my boutique, FRIDA—recognized by Living Luxe Magazine and British Vogue, and located just across the courtyard from the renowned Bicycle Thief Restaurant.

I design beautiful pieces for a discerning clientele. My jewellery is handmade in Canada by master goldsmiths and diamond setters, using the finest quality precious metals and exquisite ethically sourced gemstones, diamonds, and pearls.

In addition to signature FRIDA collections, discover exclusive creations from local and international artisans and designers.

The Prow Gallery

Continue your creative journey just around the corner, facing Lower Water Street, with a visit to the Prow Gallery. Contemporary Canadian art takes centre stage, and thoughtful curation offers a glimpse into the creative spirit of the East Coast and of Canada as a whole.

My dear friend and internationally renowned artist, Dawn MacNutt, presents her beautiful woven sculptures at the gallery, alongside established Mi’kmaw artist Alan Syliboy and many other talented artists.

Market Price

Market Price offers a great selection of the coolest sneakers, plus an interesting mix of casual streetwear for both men and women.

Dining At Bishop’s Landing

I am constantly asked for lunch and dinner recommendations. The Bicycle Thief and Ristorante a Mano offer consistently fabulous fare: fresh food, beautifully presented dishes with excellent wine lists, plus seating outside.

Sushi at Sea Smoke is also wonderful. Sit outside at a fire-pit table by the water, relax, people watch, and enjoy!

Queen’s Marque District

Continue along the boardwalk for approximately five minutes and visit this energetic, signature waterfront district. Queen’s Marque is home to the luxurious Muir HotelPeace by ChocolateDriftBar Sofia, Another Shop, and more. Outdoor public spaces, dining and art installations, all at the water’s edge.

Mystic

An absolute must, if you have time, is Mystic, a fine-dining experience. The team will guide you through a personalized culinary journey, with tasting menus designed to showcase the best of land and sea. The decor is casual sophistication and is exceptional in every way.

Extend your stay in coastal luxury

Muir Hotel

If you’re spending the night, Muir Hotel is my top recommendation. More than a hotel, it’s an immersive luxury experience, rooted in the essence of the Atlantic. Sip a nightcap at BKS, the hotel’s exclusive speakeasy, browse a private gallery of regionally curated art, or embark on a private tour for breathtaking city views and coastline from the water aboard the Muir’s 36-foot Morris yacht.

No matter how long you stay, Halifax offers a luxury experience that is both timeless and unique. It’s a place where refinement meets authenticity. From windswept coastlines to elevated experiences, Halifax exudes a quiet elegance that stays with you long after you leave.
