Cruise to Downtown Dartmouth on the Alderney Ferry

Begin at the Halifax Ferry Terminal and take the Alderney ferry across Halifax Harbour. The approximately 15-minute crossing offers views of the Halifax and Dartmouth waterfronts, Georges Island, and passing ships.

When the upper deck is open, head outside for panoramic harbour views. Bring a light layer, as it can feel cooler on the water—even during summer.

The ferry arrives at Alderney Landing in Downtown Dartmouth. If you’re following this itinerary on a Saturday, spend a few minutes browsing the Alderney Landing Farmers’ Market. You can also visit The Craig Gallery or walk through Ferry Terminal Park before continuing.

Eat lunch at The Canteen

Crobster roll at The Canteen

From Alderney Landing, walk approximately five minutes to The Canteen on Portland Street.

One of the restaurant’s signature dishes is the crobster roll, made with Nova Scotian snow crab and lobster, grainy mustard, truffle aioli and fresh dill on a toasted bun. Check the current menu and opening hours before visiting, as offerings may change and the lobster roll is seasonal.

Stroll up to Sullivan's Pond

After lunch, walk to Sullivan’s Pond, a green space connected to the historic Shubenacadie Canal.

From The Canteen, walk up Portland Street, turn left onto King Street and then right onto Ochterloney Street. Continue until you reach Sullivan’s Pond.

Follow the paved path around the pond and look for the locally famous geese. During the warmer months, you may also come across a concert or community event at the pavilion.

Shop & snack in Downtown Dartmouth before sailing back across the harbour

Pastries at Two If By Sea, a cafe in Downtown Dartmouth.

Walk back toward Alderney Landing through Downtown Dartmouth’s shopping district. Portland Street and the surrounding blocks are home to independent shops selling gifts, clothing, records, and locally made products.

Browse shops such as Kept and Trainyard, then stop for a snack before returning to Halifax. Try a crêpe from Portland Street Crêperie or pick up a croissant and coffee from Two If By Sea.
