Ride the Halifax Harbour Ferry

X
Halifax Harbour Ferry
Year-Round

The Halifax Harbour Ferry offers a quick and affordable way to cross the harbour by boat. Taking about 15 minutes, the ride offers views of both waterfronts, nearby islands, working ships, and the city skyline from the water.

Things to See and Do

Travelling across, you’ll get 360-degree views of the harbour, with sailboats, working vessels, naval ships, historic Georges Island, and McNabs Island all visible from the water.

Downtown Halifax offers direct access to the Halifax Waterfront, which stretches for more than four kilometres along the harbour. Along the boardwalk, you can explore Queen’s Marque, Salt Yard, and the Harbour South District, where you’ll find public art, shops, cafés, restaurants, ice cream shops, and more.

On the Dartmouth side, the Alderney Landing area connects directly to Downtown Dartmouth and the waterfront, where you can explore shops, restaurants, the harbourwalk, and public murals. The Ferry Terminal Park Playground also makes it a convenient stop for families. If you arrive at the Woodside terminal, you can follow the harbourwalk to Alderney Landing and return by ferry from there, or do the route in reverse.

Planning Your Visit

What to bring

  • A light jacket or sweater, since it can feel cooler on the water even during summer.
  • Comfortable walking shoes if you plan to explore both waterfronts after your ride.
  • Exact cash fare, transit tickets, or the HFXGO app can all be used for payment. Children under 12 ride free. Transfers are included with your fare and are valid on buses and ferries for up to 90 minutes.

When to go

  • Summer and early fall are popular for ferry rides because of the warmer weather.
  • Morning rides after rush hour are often quieter and can include fog drifting across the harbour, while evening crossings offer views of the skyline as the sun sets.
  • The ferry operates year-round, allowing you to experience the harbour in every season.

Insider Tip

Grab a coffee from Café Lunette before boarding from the Halifax side and then head up to the upper deck of the ferry for harbour views. If you’re crossing around lunch or dinner time, Evan’s Fresh Seafoods at Alderney Landing is a great stop for fresh seafood before or after your ferry ride.
