What to Do Here

The experience begins with an opening prayer and smudging ceremony, followed by creating your own mosaic glass coaster. Conversations are encouraged throughout, so don’t be afraid to ask questions. 

Along the way, you’ll learn about Mi’kmaw, Anishinaabe, and Anisininew teachings, hear directly from the artists, receive a guided tour of the artists’ Welcome to Turtle Island installation, and develop mosaic glass art skills through a guided workshop. All materials are provided, and you’ll leave with your finished coaster and an Indigenous Mosaic Art Kit inspired by the Seven Grandfather Teachings to continue creating at home. 

The experience concludes with a cultural closing ceremony. Admission to the museum is included, allowing you to explore its exhibits, tours, and film screenings after the workshop.

• Pier 21 is easily accessible by public transit, with several Halifax Transit routes stopping nearby. If you’re driving, paid parking is available on-site.

• To make the most of the museum admission included with your experience, allow an extra hour to explore the museum and discover stories of immigration through images, artifacts, and personal narratives.

After your experience at the Canadian Museum of Immigration, stop by Garrison Brewing on their Halifax Seaport patio for a locally brewed beer or cider. It’s just a short walk away and a favourite local spot.
