Fall River, Nova Scotia B2T 0G8
Step into the forests and along the shoreline near Halifax, where edible plants, mushrooms, and seaweeds grow in plain sight. On this guided foraging tour with Jolanta Grossman of Terroir & Wild Ecotours, you’ll learn how to identify and responsibly gather them while immersed in the natural landscape.
Things to See and Do
You’ll meet your guide at Conrad’s Beach in the spring, Ingramport in the summer, or the Fall River/Sackville area in the fall. From there, take in the sea breeze and follow your guide along the shore as they explain the structure of seaweed, how to harvest it sustainably, where and when it grows, how it’s processed, the different categories and their unique characteristics, and its effects on the body.
You’ll then go on a forest walk and learn to identify various edible plants and mushrooms.
Mushroom foraging usually begins in July. Your guide will walk you through poisonous, edible, and medicinal mushrooms, with a focus on their traditional uses and connections to immunity and wellness. You’ll also learn the ethics, cautions, and techniques of mushroom foraging, along with the tree associations of different mushrooms.
Afterwards, indulge in dishes like Ukrainian borscht with venison, lemon, and wild rose coconut balls; oyster mushrooms; and chaga mushroom tea with fresh ginger, cayenne pepper, spruce, and pine syrup.
