Just northwest of Citadel Hill, the Halifax Common is one of the city's largest public green spaces. It’s where people come to skate, swim, play sports, picnic, and enjoy some of the city's best outdoor recreation.
What to See and Do
The Halifax Common is divided into two sections by Cogswell Street, each offering a different experience.
The North Common is home to wide-open green space, softball and cricket fields, a large fountain, public washrooms, and the Emera Oval. Mature trees provide plenty of shade for picnics, while the open lawns are ideal for throwing a frisbee, kicking a soccer ball, or relaxing.
The Emera Oval is one of Halifax’s most popular outdoor attractions. During the winter, visitors can skate on the largest artificially refrigerated outdoor ice surface east of Quebec City. In the warmer months, the 400-metre loop is used for cycling, rollerblading, skateboarding, and riding scooters. Skates, helmets, bikes, scooters, and other equipment can all be borrowed free of charge.
South of Cogswell Street, the Central Common is the hub for sports and family activities.
Play a game of tennis or pickleball on the courts, cool off at the outdoor pool, or spend time at one of Halifax’s largest playgrounds.
During the summer, the Halifax Central Common Pool is one of the city’s most popular places to cool off. The facility features a 25-metre lap pool, a beach-style entry with interactive water features, climbing walls, change rooms, washrooms, and a large, shaded deck.
