Take part in a long-time tradition in Clam Harbour, dating back to time immemorial, guided by a fourth-generation professional clam digger.
Things to See and Do
You’ll meet your guide at Memory Lane Heritage Village in the Clam Factory. After getting familiar with the digging tools, you’ll head to the clam flats in Clam Harbour, known as E’se’katik by the Mi’kmaq (meaning “at the place of clams”), who have dug clams here for thousands of years. Here, you’ll learn how to identify the best digging spots and how to harvest clams.
Once you’ve gotten muddy and gathered your catch, you’ll return to the village to enjoy clams your guide dug two days earlier, rinsed and prepared at Memory Lane. You can take home what you’ve collected—your guide will explain how to store, clean, and cook them. Your all-you-can-eat clams are served with a choice of sandwich, soup, or baked beans, plus beverages. Finish with gingerbread with rhubarb sauce for dessert.
A self-guided tour of the village is included, where you can also meet the kittens and sheep that roam the farm.
Planning Your Visit
Getting there
- Memory Lane is just over an hour’s drive from Downtown Halifax.
What to bring
- Dress in clothes you don’t mind getting muddy—this is a very hands-on experience. Bare feet are recommended, but water shoes are available to borrow. Dress in a few layers, as it can be cool on the coast. The village has bug spray, water, and towels to clean your feet at the end of the dig.
- Bring a cooler, ice, and a container if you want to take your clams home.
Tickets
- Tickets can be purchased online. You must book at least 48 hours in advance.
- Times are based on tide predictions and can be affected by local wind and offshore storm conditions. They will be confirmed closer to the excursion date or upon booking.
