Beyond Brunch: Fresh Ways To Celebrate Mother's Day in Halifax

X

Go beyond brunch this Mother's Day and celebrate motherhood in all of its many forms with some fun local suggestions.

Venture out on a coastal hike

If Mom loves the outdoors, head out on a coastal hike together. We’ve compiled a list of local favourite hikes where land meets sea, boasting unspoiled views of the rugged Atlantic coast. Kick it up a notch and make a staycation out of it with a travel-conscious itinerary.

Unwind at a local spa

Pamper Mom with a trip to the spa. Whether she’s into a specific treatment, such as a wine-paired pedicure, or would prefer to rejuvenate with a hydrothermal Nordic circuit, there’s a spa and treatment for that in Halifax.

Design your own bespoke perfume

Design a fragrance as unique as Mom is at The 7 Virtues Perfume Atelier, the beloved brand’s only experience of its kind. With billions of possible blends, you’ll craft a bespoke scent that tells a story – whether it’s bold and adventurous or soft and romantic.

Walk along the stations to find your favourite scents. Once you’ve made your selections, you’ll be taken to a work station to mix the scents together in your perfume bottle, adding small amounts as you go to create your dream perfume. Once you’ve filled your bottle, you’ll receive a label, where you’ll be able to name your bespoke perfume.

Give Mom her very own one-of-a-kind perfume – or better yet, take her out for a mother-daughter date at The 7 Virtues Perfume Atelier and create your own fragrances together.

Get crafty at a workshop

If Mom loves some leisurely crafting, surprise her with a trip to Thinking Ceramic for a pottery painting session. Pick your piece of pottery from an expansive selection of options and spend some quality time with Mom as you paint your pieces together. Thinking Ceramic will fire your work of art, and you’ll be able to pick it up later.

If you’re looking to sweeten things up for Mother’s Day, grab your spot at Sugar Nursery’s cookie decorating class, taking place on May 9, where you’ll learn the fundamentals of royal icing and learning how to outline and flood cookies to create the perfect smooth canvas. Then, you’ll practice piping techniques to design playful florals, and swoon-worthy details that add depth and charm to each cookie. If Mom loves to bake, bring her along for a fun experience together, or attend the class by yourself, and surprise (and impress) her with the sweetest batch of cookies she’s ever seen.

On May 10 at Chain Yard Urban Cidery, treat Mom to some painting with pints and customize your own flower pot with paint, then bring it to life by filling it with soil and fresh spring blooms. Prefer something longer-lasting? You’ll also have the option to paint handmade flower molds and design a bouquet that lasts forever.

Looking to get a little extra crafty? Try your hand at pottery with a drop-in class at Best Kind Mud Shop. In this 3-hour drop-in handbuilding class, you’ll be able to unleash your inner artist and create anything you want. You’ll be given some ideas on what to create in case you’re not sure where to start, receive some guidance on basic techniques, and be equipped with all the materials you need to bring your creation to life. Best Kind Mud Shop will take care of firing your piece, and you’ll be able to pick it up a couple of weeks after your class. Visiting from out of town? No sweat – this studio can ship your creation right to your home if you’re not around to pick it up.

Splurge on a local shopping spree

Treat Mom to a shopping spree around some of Halifax’s most beloved local businesses. From art to clothing and more, we’ve rounded up a selection of sustainable local shops to browse and spoil Mom at.

Frolic around a therapy farm

Get outside and up close with some fuzzy friends at Ataraxy Farm. Take a free tour around the farm and cuddle with therapy goats, horses, donkeys, and a mule – you can even participate in a goat yoga class on Saturday evenings. Be sure to treat Mom to some artisan apothecary goods made on-site with milk sourced straight from the goats to tie the whole experience together.
