Located between Salter and Sackville Streets on the Halifax Waterfront, Salt Yard is a kiosk-style village featuring a mix of food vendors, retail shops, and public seating. It’s a great spot to enjoy the ocean breeze, grab a bite, or browse local goods.

Things to See and Do

Get in line for one of the many food kiosks, then grab a table in the seating area or stroll the waterfront. There are lots of food options, whether you want a donair, ice cream, a lobster roll, poutine, or one of the famous BeaverTails.

For sit-down dining options, you can dine al fresco at either The Beer Garden (The BG) or Salt Yard Social. The former offers classic beer garden food like burgers, pretzel bites, fish and chips, an Insta-famous hot dog tower, and a lineup of local craft beers on tap. The latter offers hand-tossed thin-crust pizza, burgers, tacos, and plenty of seafood options, plus a fantastic cocktail list.

Grab a bike from I Heart Bikes and explore the four-kilometre waterfront or join a motorized guided tour with Segway Nova Scotia for additional commentary on the area.

Shop for artisanal handcrafted gifts at Amos Pewter, visit Sitamuk for authentic Mi’kmaw and Indigenous crafts, browse Treaty Truckhouse for Indigenous art, or hit up High Seas Taffy & Tees for locally designed and printed souvenir clothing, stickers, prints, and cards.

While you’re there, stop by the non-profit Canadian Sea Turtle Network’s booth to learn about local turtle conservation efforts.

Planning Your Visit

What to bring

  • A water bottle and backpack or crossbody bag come in handy if you opt for a bike or Segway tour.

Getting there

  • Salter Lot is a large, paid public lot adjacent to Salt Yard, accessible from Lower Water Street. There are additional paid outdoor lots in the area. There is also nearby street parking and bus stops. It’s about a 5-minute walk from the Halifax Ferry Terminal, making it easy to get there from Dartmouth.

Insider Tip

Getting on the water from Salt Yard is a great idea. Just on the other side of the Beer Garden are jet ski rentals and several boat tours. The Harbour Hopper tour—a retrofitted military vehicle that travels on both land and water—also departs directly behind Salt Yard.
