Flame-Kissed Fare: Live-Fire Dining in Halifax

X

There’s something magical about the warmth and depth of flavours only live-fire cooking can bring, especially as the cooler weather sets in. In Halifax, a few restaurants are combining the art of open-flame cooking with local fare to warm your soul.

Tribute

121-1341 Lower Water St, Halifax

At Tribute, dining feels like an invitation to a kitchen gathering where you’re close enough to feel the gentle heat and see the craft of live-fire cooking up close. Tribute brings guests right into the heart of the action with an open kitchen. At centre stage: a hearth that serves as the blazing anchor that fills the space with a deep woody, smoky aroma, creating a sense of warmth and welcome.

Tribute’s menu balances tradition with creativity, offering dishes influenced by global flavours, sourced with seasonal Nova Scotian ingredients, and centered around live-fire techniques. The menu is thoughtful, highlighting around 10 dishes, each crafted carefully by the culinary team.  Specialties include delicate handmade pastas and Bistecca alla Fiorentina, to get an idea of what’s cooking in this fast-paced kitchen. Expect dishes that combine simplicity with deeply layered flavours, made from traditional methods that are not widely practiced today; no corners are cut here. The welcoming vibe doesn’t stop at the atmosphere – Tribute takes dietary restrictions very seriously, and will go above and beyond to deliver a meal suited to your needs. Here, everyone is welcome at the table.

Salt + Ash Beach House

170-1741 Lower Water St, Halifax

Salt + Ash Beach House feels like an extension of the coast itself. This breezy, relaxed space by the water offers a beautiful mix of casual seaside charm and the inviting appeal of live-fire cooking. With its coastal decor and laid-back atmosphere, Salt + Ash has a warm, nostalgic vibe that invites you to unwind and feel good about it.

The menu celebrates the Atlantic coast, from wood-fired pizzas to tender, grilled seafood, and hearty shareable dishes, where every bite feels like it was made to warm you from the inside out. The beach house feel, coupled with dishes from the Itty Bitty Fried Chicken to their bone-in short rib, makes this spot ideal for a relaxed night out that still feels special. Local craft beers, fine wines, and creative cocktails round out the experience, making it the perfect place to kick back after a day by the sea.

Casa di Stefano

4-111 Cobequid Rd, Lower Sackville

Casa di Stefano was born from a backyard tradition. For years, Maayan and Rita Harel hosted lively neighbourhood pizza nights around their wood-fired oven in Middle Sackville. What started as a shared love of food and community soon grew into something bigger. When Nissim and Michal Balas joined forces with their own culinary expertise, a restaurant took shape, blending authentic techniques with a warm, welcoming spirit.

Stepping into Casa di Stefano feels like joining a family table. A custom-built Neapolitan oven imported from Naples is the heart of the kitchen, where thin, airy pizzas hit the table with just the right amount of char and a pair of scissors on the side for cutting at the table. The menu stretches beyond pizza to flame-roasted vegetables, handmade pasta, salads, and sandwiches, all built around simple, honest ingredients. Dessert isn’t an afterthought here Michal’s pastry program is serious, offering decadent desserts, from their best-seller spiced carrot cake, layered with cream cheese and mascarpone, to their chocolate bliss cake that’s as rich as it sounds. This little slice of Sackville feels warm in every aspect, from the food on the table to the warm, friendly staff.
