Bison Tours and Sustainable Farming at Lindsay Lake Farms

X

Rolling hills, serene lakes, and diverse forests are what you come to expect when visiting the Musquodoboit Valley. Add a herd of Plains Bison to that mix, and you’ve landed at Lindsay Lake Farms & Lodge Ltd..

Bison are an unconventional sight in the province, but one within reach from Halifax in less than an hour. The journey is well worth it—not only to witness these majestic animals roaming the farm but also to engage your senses. Explore the farm at your own pace, unwind by the tranquil lake and natural wetlands, savour delicious treats from the bakery, relax in a cozy overnight cottage, and enjoy much more.

History of Lindsay Lake Farms

In 2019, Jan and Christiane Teerling purchased a property that would transform their lives. Originally from Germany, the long-time deer farmers sought to expand their operations but faced limitations in their home country. A worldwide search for the perfect land led them to Nova Scotia.

Relocating overseas was no easy task, especially with the ever-changing travel regulations during the pandemic. The Teerling family—Jan, Christiane, and their two sons, Ian and Cedric—often found themselves split between Germany and Canada, juggling the challenges of closing one chapter while starting another.

Finally, it all came together. With 11 shipping containers, 14 vehicles (including tractors and trailers), one Clydesdale horse, two dogs, and their four determined selves, they arrived in the heart of Nova Scotia, ready to embark on a new adventure. Since then, they’ve transformed the property in many ways, brought in a herd of bison from Ontario, and are working to fulfill the dreams that began overseas.

Sustainable Farming at Work

Bison farming is a sustainable practice. These robust mammals require fewer resources and less maintenance than cattle, leaving a minimal environmental footprint. The Teerling family has made it their mission to elevate sustainable farming practices.

Many features of the farm were impressively built by the family using materials found on their land. For instance, the fence posts around the bison field were crafted from trees felled by Hurricane Fiona. The 40,000 tons of gravel used to build a road through the property were also sourced onsite. With expertise in both farming and forestry, the Teerlings operate a sawmill to process their lumber, and the byproduct wood chips are used as fuel for heating. Hay to feed the bison is grown right on the property, while wild blueberries harvested from the land are used in the bakery goods.

All future initiatives will be guided by their commitment to sustainability. “We feel like this land chose us,” Christiane says. “It is our job to take care of it.”
