Nova Scotia is beautiful year-round, but there’s something special about Halifax during the winter. With beautifully weathered seascapes and wonderful activities both inside and out, you can’t help but fall in love with winter in Halifax.
That said, the chilly weather can make packing for a visit to our city particularly challenging at this time of year. But we can help! Follow our winter packing tips and you’ll be prepared to explore the city, no matter the weather!
1 – Warm Layers
The secret to staying warm in the winter is layers. Think pieces that can be worn together when it’s cold, but can also mixed and matched for different activities.
Packing a hat, scarf and mittens is especially important for outdoor adventures. If you forget these key pieces, drop by the Halifax Seaport Farmers Market – home to local vendors with beautiful winter accessories.
2 – Waterproof Outerwear
When you’ve packed with the elements in mind, a little snow (or rain) won’t keep you stuck indoors.
Waterproof walking boots and a jacket are must-haves. After all, nothing will ruin a day of exploring like having wet clothes. If you plan on having some outdoor fun, snow pants may be a good addition to your suitcase.
3 – Winter Skin Essentials
The cold winter air can do a number on your skin so be sure to come prepared with lip chap, lotion and, an essential all year-round, sunscreen. Travellers can often be misled by the dropping temperatures, but sunburns can easily happen in winter, especially when you’re busy enjoying winter activities.
4 – An Umbrella
The weather in Halifax is known to change quickly so it’s not unusual for rain to sneak up on travellers.
When you’re out and about for the day, it’s always a good idea to have an umbrella on-hand. Better safe than sorry – and wet!
5 – Your Camera or Smartphone
There are so many spots to snap a photo of the city’s winter scenery. From historic Citadel Hill and the bustling waterfront, to the popular Halifax Commons and the growing North End, Halifax is extra photogenic when layered in glistening white snow. So grab your camera, explore the city, and make memories that will last a lifetime!
6 – A Love For The Great Outdoors
Last but very not least is an essential item – don’t forget to bring your love for the great outdoors!
Halifax has a variety of outdoor activities to enjoy during the winter. Get outside by throwing on some skates and gliding around at the Emera Oval, or grabbing a pair of snowshoes and going for a stroll – equipment rentals for both are available.
Explore Halifax’s coastal beauty with a trip to a nearby seaside community like Peggy’s Cove or by catching a wave in what’s known as one of the world’s best winter surfing destinations.
No matter what you choose, winter is a great season to take in Halifax’s natural surroundings!
Now that you’re perfectly packed, all that’s left to do is come and enjoy the city of Halifax. Wondering what to add to your itinerary? Here’s a sample family winter getaway.
Safe and happy travels!
