It’s no secret that Canada is celebrating its 150th birthday this year – but did you know the Public Gardens is as well? The beautiful Victorian garden at the heart of the city covers 16 acres and has been a National historic site since 1984. They’ve got a slew of special events planned for this special summer, here are a few of the highlights:
June 10 – Public Garden Birthday Party
Come celebrate another beautiful year in the Public Gardens with their 150th birthday party! Festivities start at the main gates at 11am, and will be followed by birthday cake and music throughout the afternoon. Stop on by!
June 11 – 14 – Rhododendron Days
Spanning four days, Rhododendron days celebrate the flowers when they’re at their brightest and best. There are many special events scheduled, visit the events calendar to learn more.
June 30, July 21, August 11 – Atlantic Film Festival – ‘Canadian Comedy’
The Atlantic Film Festival brings their popular outdoor film showings to the Public Gardens this year, with the Canadian Comedy series. Don’t miss free showings of Strange Brew, The Grand Seduction and Meatballs one Friday a month on the inflatable big screen.
July 8 – Brides Day Revisited
Did you have your wedding photos taken at the Public Gardens? On July 8th, from 1pm – 4pm, brides are invited to return to the gardens in their wedding dress to have their photo taken and relive their special day.
August 5 – Mayor’s Garden Party
Join Halifax Mayor Mike Savage for the annual Natal Day Mayor’s Garden Party. Come and enjoy live music presented by the Atlantic Federation of Musicians and many activities for children. There will also be refreshments while quantities last – including birthday cake!
There are also numerous recurring events scheduled for the summer:
Don’t miss story time at the public gardens, taking place at 10:30am every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the summer. Co-hosted by beloved local businesses, Woozles Children’s Bookstore and Uncommon Grounds, the program is free with no registration required. In nice weather, story time occurs outside by the big tree near the café in the gardens, otherwise the group meets inside the coffee shop. Looking for more info? Call Woozles at 902-423-7626.
