Top 5 Art Galleries in Halifax!

Halifax, Nova Scotia is a city of artists and artisans. Check out the five galleries below for authentic Maritime Canadian talent.

  1. Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (AGNS). Delight in the work of renowned Nova Scotian folk artist Maud Lewis. See her tiny house and take in her charming paintings. The AGNS showcases a variety of works from many artists and regularly hosts travelling exhibits.
  1. Anna Leonowens Gallery. If you know the movie “The King and I”, you might recognize the name Anna Leonowens. She was an Indian born, British travel writer, social activist, educator and the co-founder of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. The NSCAD gallery, named in her honour, has three public galleries which feature primarily student work and host roughly 125 exhibits per year.
  1. Khyber Center for the Arts. Located on 5521 Cornwallis St, the Khyber is an artist-run center aiming to foster critical thought through the presentation of contemporary art in all mediums. The Khyber hosts events such as Halifax Soup, a bimonthly grant program to support small to medium sized creative projects, which are voted on by community members while sharing a meal.
  1. Craig Gallery. Based in Alderney Landing, this gallery is programmed by volunteers with the mission to promote local artists by hosting work in a variety of mediums. The Craig Gallery is currently exhibiting a pop-up show by Swoon Fine Art & Antiques, called Home is Where the Heart Is.
  1. Studio 21. Located near the Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market, Studio 21 has been showcasing contemporary art for 30 years. The gallery is known for supporting young artists and 20% of proceeds are given to a scholarship fund at NSCAD University. Studio 21 is currently exhibiting work by Mark Grantham and Papier Halifax.
