It is rarely scorching hot or freezing cold, however we are in Canada so it still gets chilly of course! When the fresh snow falls and the air gets crisp, Canadians know that it’s time to make the most of the season.
Here are some fun ideas for enjoying all the BEST of winter in Halifax:
1 – Get outside
Instead of hiding from the weather, why not get outside and enjoy it? Skating outdoors is exhilarating! There is nothing like the feeling of the wind on your face and your heart beating through your chest. If you are short of skates and equipment, no worries! The Emera Oval on the Halifax Commons offers free rental equipment onsite and it’s open to all ages and abilities. If you prefer a more grounded activity, try borrowing or renting (free!) snowshoes and head to a trail either on your own or with a guide (thanks to Hike Nova Scotia).
2 – Learn something new
Exercising your brain is a great way to get (and keep) active on cold days. Visit the NEW Discovery Centre and learn about bugs, how the weather works or how to make a giant bubble. You could also spend an afternoon admiring the bright and vibrant art of Maud Lewis at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.
3 – Get cozy and competitive
Sometimes sitting inside is the best thing to do in winter, but it doesn’t have to be boring. Warm up with some tasty beer and snacksby playing a fun game at The Board Room Game Café or teaming up for trivia night at one of Halifax’s many bars. If you’re going to get cozy, you might as well have some company!
4 -Make something!
Paint some pottery at Clay Café, take a sewing class at Patch Halifax or learn to knit at The Loop! Concentrating on a creative activity is a great stress reliever, and you will feel personal pride that you made something with your hands that you can wear, display or give to a loved one. Plus, you will be grateful for that crocheted scarf when you go back outside!
This winter season, don’t hide under a blanket until spring. Get out there and enjoy Halifax!
