About This Experience

One of Halifax’s only year-round markets, The Hydrostone Market is located on a charming street lined with stone buildings and filled with local shops and delicious restaurants.

The Hydrostone is a lively, vibrant area to shop, dine, and experience one of Halifax’s most historic communities.

SHOP: Whether you’re shopping for furniture or getting a special gift, The Hydrostone Market has what you’re looking for.

DINE: A cup of fresh coffee or a night of fine dining, The Hydrostone Market has all the amenities to suit your plans.

This area is steeped in history (see below!), as it was one of the neighbourhoods most effected by the infamous Halifax Explosion, the largest man-made explosion prior to the development of nuclear weapons.

The History of the Hydrostone:
From the ashes of the catastrophic Halifax Explosion, which shattered the city’s North End on 6 December 1917, rose the Hydrostone District, a splendid example of an English-style garden suburb.
Completed in 1920, this well-preserved neighbourhood was designed according to the most-up-to-date yet practical principles of town planning. The buildings, all variations on the same architectural theme and all constructed with “Hydro-Stone” concrete blocks, are aesthetically arranged along each side of wide treed courts. The houses and landscape contribute to a remarkable sense of time and place. source
