6 Spring & Summer Fun Runs in the Halifax Region

header image via Maritime Race Weekend

One sure-fire sign of spring in Halifax is the Scotiabank Blue Nose Marathon. The sight of tens of thousands of people running this town over 3 days in May is sure to put a smile on your face and make you look forward to being active outside again.

Why not challenge yourself this spring or summer by participating in a running event or race? You don’t have to be a professional runner, or even a runner at all! There are lots of options for every age and fitness level happening throughout both seasons.

Here are some of the best runs to check out while the sun shines:

1 – Hillside to Haiti

This 5k race raises funds for the Hillside Wesleyan Haiti Missions and takes place on the scenic Salt Marsh trail system in Cole Harbour. If you prefer a shorter route, there is also a 2.5k option and participants are welcome to run or walk depending on their preference.

There is even a free 5k training program on the website for anyone who needs help preparing!

Race day: Saturday May 5, 2018
Location: Salt Marsh Trail, Cole Harbour
Race distance(s): 2.5 km or 5 km

2 – Tidal Trail Run

A slightly longer race, the Tidal Trail is run on the meticulously groomed Salt Marsh Trail in Cole Harbror. Known for its breathtaking scenery and flat terrain, the Tidal Trail takes runners on a stunning route through the salt-infused Nova Scotian air.

Race day: Sunday June 3, 2018
Location: Salt Marsh Trail, Cole Harbour
Race distance(s): 10 km or 15 km

3 – Halifax Walk, Run or Ride for Scleroderma

Scleroderma is “a chronic, often progressive autoimmune disease – like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and multiple sclerosis – in which the body’s immune system attacks its own tissues”. There is no cure, so fundraisers like this one are essential to support potentially life-saving research.

This is an event that is good for your heart in more ways than one!

Race day: Saturday June 16, 2018
Location: DeWolf Park, Bedford
Race distance(s): 5 km run or 1 km walk

4 – EPIC @ Night 6.1k (and MORE EPIC races)

What better way to kick off Canada Day weekend than with the EPIC@Night event!

This nighttime race will start the EPIC Canadian race weekend off with a bang – literally! The race will finish with fireworks!

After the race, runners will move to the after party with one of Eastern Canada’s classic kitchen party bands!

Check out the rest of the EPIC events here.

Race day: Friday, June 29, 2018
Location: Graham’s Grove, Dartmouth
Race distance(s): 6.1 km

5 – MACPASS Miles 2018

MACPASS Miles is a FREE one mile race across the Macdonald Bridge in Halifax.

After a two year hiatus to complete a major bridge reconstruction project, the Big Lift, Halifax Harbour Bridges is pleased to welcome back runners to the bridge to run the one mile from Halifax to Dartmouth. The centre span of the bridge is now two metres higher than it was, so be prepared to be challenged!

Race day: Sunday August 5, 2018
Location: Macdonald Bridge, Halifax & Dartmouth
Race distance(s): 1 mile

6 – Dartmouth Natal Day Road Races

Taking place in downtown Dartmouth on (you guessed it) Natal Day, this event is one of the oldest road races in North America! And with a registration fee of only $20 it’s also one of the most affordable.

Runners of all abilities are welcome and have the choice between a 2-mile or 6-mile race.

Race day: Monday August 6, 2018
Location: 61 Dundas Street, Dartmouth
Race distance(s): 2 miles (3.2 km) or 6 miles (9.6 km)

BONUS RUN: Maritime Race Weekend

One last race to ease you out of the summer season!

This race is everything Maritimes: from ocean scenery to pirates, local bands and of course East Coast comfort food and beer! The route takes runners along the gorgeous coastline of Halifax’s Eastern Shore.

Need an extra challenge? Pick 2 races over 2 days!

Race day: September 14 & 15, 2018
Location: Eastern Passage & Cow Bay
Race distance(s): 4 distances: Sunset & Sunrise 5K, Coastal 10K, Scenic Half Marathon (21km) and Classic Marathon (42km)

Last words: remember, the key word here is fun! Enjoy your runs!
