July 29 - August 2
“Chess is a sport whose time has come. Let’s make Halifax a part of it.” With these words, a City of Halifax official encouraged Chess Nova Scotia to organize a major chess event for 2020. “Dream big,” he urged.
We did! The result? Pawn Wise: The Atlantic All-Ages Chess Festival 2020 (now re-scheduled to 2022).
WHY PAWN WISE?
Chess Nova Scotia has chosen the name, Pawn Wise, to highlight the fact that chess is an enjoyable, all-ages, lifelong activity for cognitive wellbeing.
Game theory recognizes chess as an abstract template (or thinking tool) for certain of the human sciences, as economics: a field of uncertainty where perceived obstacles must be overcome by rational, best-choice decision-making. And medical research now identifies chess as second only to dancing as a defense against dementia.
From children to seniors, to engage with chess is to be pawn wise!
CELEBRATE AND EDUCATE!
The Festival is for players and the general public alike.
For players, two tournaments will run simultaneously: The 11th Canadian Seniors Chess Championship, being held in the Maritimes for the first time; and the 1st Nova Scotia Mayflower Open, for players of all ages.
Both tournaments will pause for the Festival side events: the Scholastic Chess Exhibition, a showcase of events for children, parents, and seniors; and Chess Considered – Four Questions, an evening panel of visiting and local scholars on critical questions about the game of chess.
