As you walk through Halifax, the beautiful blend of historical and contemporary architecture tells the story of the city. A story that is all around us, every day—just waiting to be discovered.
On June 2nd and 3rd from 10am to 4pm, Doors Open Halifax is giving you the key to take a deeper look by opening the doors to some of Halifax’s most iconic and fascinating buildings. Start planning your Doors Open experience, and see a whole new side of Halifax!
Here are just 5 of the many locations that you can experience for FREE during this annual event.
Housed in the beautiful brewery market building, Alexander Keith’s Brewery is a Halifax institution—and a main stop during Doors Open Halifax. During the event, visitors will be transported back in time as they tour through one of North America’s oldest commercial breweries.
This unique tour, hosted by animators in period costume, will let you discover the story of Alexander Keith, the art of brewing, and the pleasure of tasting a local favourite.

St. Paul’s Anglican Church is a focal point of the city’s downtown core, standing tall in Grand Parade. Having opened in 1750, one year after the founding of Halifax, it is the oldest Anglican church in North America and the oldest building in Halifax—and a must-visit during Doors Open Halifax.
During your tour, keep an eye out for the piece of wooden window frame that was lodged in the wall of the church during the Halifax explosion, and still stands there today.
With a rich history as a provincial museum, the city library, the city jail—with an infamous escape—and a government building that has been home to many famous politicians, including Alexander Keith, it’s no surprise that this stop is one of the most popular on the event’s roster.
On your visit, not only will you learn more about the history of City Hall, but you’ll have the chance to take a seat in the mayor’s chair.
While there, don’t forget to check out the clock on the north face that is permanently set at 9:04—the exact time the Halifax Explosion in 1917.
5 – Neptune Theatre
For over 50 years, the Neptune Theatre has been inspiring audiences with great stories as Atlantic Canada’s largest professional regional theatre. Each year, the playbill entertains patrons with a wide range of theatrical experiences, including musicals, dramas, and comedies.
During Doors Open, visitors will have a backstage pass to the 57,000-square-foot facility, including—for the first time ever—their props and wardrobe departments!
