7 big anniversaries to celebrate in Halifax this year!

While it might be the one we hear about the most, Canada’s 150th anniversary of confederation is not the only big milestone in 2017. In fact, there are lots of local festivals and businesses celebrating anniversary’s this year.

Here’s a rundown of seven other big anniversaries to celebrate this year in Halifax:

1. Propeller Brewing – 20th Anniversary
Halifax is lucky to have a flourishing craft beer scene. From establishments like Stillwell that serve the best from local breweries and beyond, to Good Robot, who brew and serve their own beers. And of course, there are those fixtures of the scene, the people who have been there through it all, like Propeller Brewing.

This year, they’re celebrating 20 years in business with some renovations to their tap room (don’t worry – you can still stop in to get your growler filled!), and other special events on the horizon. They’ll also be releasing a “series of extra special anniversary-worthy One-Hit Wonder brews” and I’m not going to lie – I’m really looking forward to them! Also, keep your eyes peeled for some upcoming special birthday party plans.

2. Segway Nova Scotia – 5th Anniversary
If you’ve spent any time on the Halifax Waterfront in the summer months, you’ve probably encountered a happy tour group exploring the city on segways. Chances are they were part of a Segway Nova Scotia group – a company that is celebrating their 5th anniversary this year! Make sure to follow them on Facebook and Twitter, and visit their website, because they’re planning on having some birthday specials throughout the year.

3. Halifax Public Gardens – 150th Anniversary
June 10, 2017

One of Halifax’s most popular attractions is marking a big milestone this year. The Halifax Public Gardens is celebrating their 150th birthday on June 10th! While not many details have been released about the evets, you can be sure it will be a draw for anyone with an interest in spending time in the gardens – whether that’s admiring their Victorian layout, or snacking on ice cream from Sugah! Check out the website of The Friends of the Public Gardens to keep up to date on event plans.

4. Halifax Pride Festival – 30th Anniversary
July 13 – 23, 2017
The first Halifax Pride Parade consisted of roughly 75 people on a route through the North End as, “primarily a protest over the lack of legal protection from discrimination, and the all-too-common threat of homophobic violence.” Over the years, the Halifax Pride Festival has flourished, becoming a large-scale celebration of diversity. From the always-popular parade, to the annual Dykes and Divas softball game on the Halifax Commons, Pride welcomes upwards of 150,000 participants each year and I can’t wait to watch that number grow!

5. Bedford Institute of Oceanography (BIO) – 55th Anniversary
Bio Expo: September 23 – 24, 2017
Did you know that Canada’s largest centre for ocean research is located in the HRM? Located on the Bedford Basin in Dartmouth, BIO is “a modern oceanographic research facility, established in 1962 by the Federal Government of Canada.”

One of its biggest events each year is the BIO Expo, and with this year being the 55th anniversary, you can expect it to be even better! BIO is open to the general public for the BIO Expo on September 23 – 24 from 9am to 3pm, and best of all, admission is free! Keep visiting for more details as they are released.

6. Halifax Pop Explosion – 25th Anniversary
October 18 – 21, 2017
Halifax had its first encounter with the Halifax Pop Explosion in September 1993. While a lot has changed since then, (did you know for a while the fest was called  ‘Halifax on Music?’, the fact that the event has been bringing good times to all attendees for 25 years has remained the same.
The lineup for the 2017 edition hasn’t yet been announced, but seeing as it’s the 25th year I’m sure we’re in for something great. If you’re a real keener, you can even grab a ‘Super Early Bird Special’ pass now! For only $59 + tax you get access to the entire festival from October 18 – 21 and guaranteed entry to the headliner shows. Plus, you’ll definitely be the coolest out of all of your friends.

7. Halifax Explosion 100th Anniversary
December 6, 2017
On December 6, 1917, Halifax was devastated by an explosion that resulted from the collision of the SS Imo and the SS Mont-Blanc in the Narrows of the Halifax Harbour. The Halifax Regional Municipality is currently working with the Halifax Explosion Anniversary Committee to plan commemorative events around the December anniversary. Check back on their website to see the plans as they are released.
