Summer may be coming to an end, but lucky for us, fall is a fantastic time of year in Halifax. The leaves start to change from green to gold, orange and red, the humidity recedes and the days tend to be sunny and warm.

Fall is also a great time for events in Halifax, with plenty of festivals, markets and cool local experiences. We’ve pulled together a list of just 15 of these awesome events and experiences to give you 15 Fun Things To Do in Halifax This September. Enjoy!


1 – Cole Harbour Harvest Festival

WHEN: Saturday, September 7, 2019

Celebrate the arrival of fall in Cole Harbour! The Festival will feature a Parade, games, family events, physical activities, Farmers’ Market, and food. This is a great family event where there’s something for everyone to experience and enjoy!

2 – FIN: Atlantic Film Festival

Get your film fix in in Halifax during the 2019 FIN Atlantic International Film Festival! This week-long celebration of film and media turns Halifax into an international destination film lovers and filmmakers alike!

3 – Halifax Chinese Festival

4 – Halifax Mac + Cheese Festival

Celebrate Halifax’s North End at this neighbourhood festival, filled with music, food, art and dance along Gottingen Street!

6 – North by Night Market

Say goodbye to summer right at the last North by Night Market of the year!

Happening at the same time as the Gottingen Uptown Festival, this streetwide celebration will feature DJs, food trucks, local artisans, in-store pop-ups, and plenty more!

7 – Fire and Water Festival

WHEN: Saturday, September 14, 2019
6 PM – 10 PM

WHERE: Alderney Landing
2 Ochterloney Street, Dartmouth

Just like our list of 15 (+1) things to do this month, you won’t want to leave the Fire and Water Festival off your calendar!

The festival will take place on the Dartmouth Waterfront, featuring fire circles, a pyrotechnic show, and loads of music and art activities!

8 – Cat Fest at the Museum of Natural History

WHEN: September 14-15, 2019
10 AM – 4 PM

WHERE: Museum of Natural History

Cat-lovers rejoice! Back for its FIFTH year, this festival for feline fanatics is happening September 14-15 at the Museum of Natural History!

This year’s event will feature cat charities, exhibitors, vendors, panels, and live cats (yes, dreams really do come true)!

9 – Switch Halifax Open Street Sunday

WHEN: Sunday, September 15, 2019
12 PM – 4 PM

On Sunday, September 15 from noon to 4pm, Agricola Street, Argyle Street, and Spring Garden Road will be closed to cars and opened up to people!

This event encourages people to explore the city using active forms of transportation. Join in on the all-ages fun with live music, art, demonstrations, activities, and more happening throughout Halifax.

10 – Atlantic Fashion Week

WHEN: September 19-22, 2019

WHERE: Multiple Venues

2019 marks the 13th season of Atlantic Fashion Week!

AFW kicks off on Thursday, September 19 with the Opening Night Showcase at Halifax Shopping Centre, followed by Showcase 2 on Friday, September 20 at Pier 21.

The Finale Showcase ends the event at Pier 21 on Saturday, September 21, wrapping up this fashion-packed weekend, brimming with dozens of talented designers.

11 – Quinfest Family Fun Day

WHEN: Saturday, September 21, 2019
11 AM – 2 PM

WHERE: Quinpool Road

Quinfest’s family-friendly street festival has taken over Quinpool Road every fall since 2007! Enjoy carnival games, live music, food samples and amazing deals at Quinpool’s shops.

12 – Halifax VegFest 2019

WHEN: Sunday, September 22, 2019
10 AM – 5 PM

WHERE: Multipurpose Room at the Halifax Forum

VegFest is back and better than ever! Browse exhibitors, sample vegan food, and have your picture taken at the VegFest photobooth.

Attendees will have access to some awesome presentations, including a brunch cooking demo, a kombucha Q&A, and plenty of resources for plant-based eating and living a healthy lifestyle!

TIP: This event isn’t just for vegans and vegetarians! Meat-eaters are more than welcome and may even learn some interesting new info!

13 – NSLC Festival of Wines

WHERE: Multiple Venues

This year’s NSLC Festival of Wines is all about the flavours of South America!

Learn about the wines from specific regions and and wineries at one of three Winemakers Dinners, or attend one of the Grand Tasting events to try a wide variety of wines! Whether you’re a wine expert of a novice enthusiast, there’s truly something for everyone at the Festival events.

TIP: Arrive prepared! Take this quiz to find your wine taste profile – it’ll make it much easier to decide which wines to sample at the Festival!

Get home safely: A free shuttle will run from the Cunard Centre to the Halifax Ferry Terminal Friday and Saturday from 4pm-5:30pm and 10pm-11:30pm.

14 – Hopscotch Festival 2019

WHEN: September 27-29, 2019

WHERE: Roger’s Square, Halifax

Hopscotch Festival is taking over Roger’s Square at the Nova Centre on Saturday, September 28!

Celebrating a decade of Hopscotch Festival’s dedication to hip hop in Halifax, this year’s festival will feature large scale live art, B-Girl and B-Boy battles, cyphers, DJs, AND a main event concert headlined by YBN Cordae!
